The Rise of Drones; The Civil and Social Use of Drones The transformation of drones in the military to the civilian world is becoming a controversial topic throughout the U.S. Many American’s worry it will interfere on our privacy and freedom we are promised in the Constitution and 4th amendment because drones pose a threat and danger to our safety. The engineers of drones are increasing their intelligence and enabling drones to think on their own. This is a heated debate and I disagree with the use of drones being used in the civilian world and policing industry as a means to spy and survey Americans. No less than fifteen to twenty years ago, the idea of drones peeping in on our phone calls, text messages, and e-mails was unheard of,†¦show more content†¦When police search your house it is required for them to bring a valid search warrant, but since 2006 drones have been able to fly over at any time and spy on us. If we have no history of crime why should we be being watched? What is the usage of all the information drones capture? And where does it all go? Well, the FAA, who has also recently been charged with overseeing drone implementation says their focus is â€Å"totally on safety,† and â€Å"We are concerned about how it’s being used only to the extent it would effect the safety of the operation.† Says FAA spokesman Less Dorr. The FAA has released an estimated 1,500 civilian drone permits since 2007. Our country will become surveillance grounds for the government if the rise of drones continues. The U.S. Governments views on drones are powerful and all for keeping drones in the U.S. system, involving the Congress, CIA and the FBI. The Congress and officials currently see out the drone mission or strike, but cannot limit it. The government has been extremely difficult in releasing information about drone strikes. The FBI and government have kept us in the dark dealing with the drone program. But just recently this year some of the records were released verifying the surveillance drones used on the American population. It is a tradition found in the Samurai, the loyal and self-sacrificing knight of ancient Japan. The Samurai is a valiant warrior who can both appreciate the beauty of nature in that of a rose blossom but will also kill or die for his master in an instant. This well-rounded warrior was the ruling class of Japan for almost seven hundred years. He fought for control of his country and to keep Japan free from outside influences. (Turnbull 1)This aristocratic warrior class arose during the 12th century wars between the Taira and Minamoto clans and was consolidated in the Tokugawa period. Samurai were privileged to wear two swords, and at one time had the right to cut down any commoner who offended them. They cultivated the martial virtues, indifference to pain or death, and unfailing loyalty to their overlords. Samurai were the dominant group in Japan. Under the Tokugawa shogunate, the samurai were removed from direct control of the villages, moved into the domain castle towns, and given government stipends. They were encouraged to take up bureaucratic posts. The Hagakure, has been dubbed the book of the samurai. It was written after a century of peace around 1716. It came to be the guide of samurai ethics until the end of the feudal period. Its short passages reflect and outline the qualities that make a samurai. Yamamoto Tsunetomo expresses in the hagakure the framework and mindset of being a samurai. Although it stands to reason that a samurai should be mindful of the Way of the samurai, it would seem that we are all negligent. Consequently, if someone were to ask, what is the true meaning of the Way of the Samurai? the person who should be able to answer promptly is rare. This is because it has not been established in ones mind beforehand. From this, ones unmindfulness of the Way can be known. Negligence is an extreme thing. (Wilson, 17) The Way of the Samurai is found in death. When it comes to either/or, there is only the quick choice of death. It is not particularly difficult. Be determined and advance. To say that dying without reaching ones aim is to die a dogs death is the frivolous way of sophisticates. When pressed with the choice of life or death, it is not necessary to gain ones aim. We all want to live. And in large part we make our logic according to what we like. But not having attained our aim and continuing to live is cowardice. This is a thin dangerous line. To die without gaining ones aim is a dogs death and fanaticism. There is no shame to this. This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai. If by setting ones heart right every morning and evening, one is able to live as though his body were already dead, he gains freedom in the Way. His whole life will be without blame, and he will succeed in his calling. (Wilson, 17)The samurai had extreme religious ideals. â€Å"Toward a Definition of Creative Nonfiction†, Brett Lott attempts to describe the genre of creative nonfiction by explaining that there is essentially no definitive model. He begins by presenting an abstract definition of the genre which he later molds and amends with additions to become a much more comprehensive working definition. However before exploring the various aspects of creative nonfiction and what it entails, Lott prefaces his essay with the statement that â€Å"we aren’t going to arrive anywhere here†. I found this particularly interesting in that it allows the reader to take Lott’s advice with a grain of salt and amend his definition after one has practiced the art creative nonfiction. He reiterates this last point when he says that â€Å"any definition of true worth to you as a writer will and must come to you experientially†. Moreover, the true definition of the genre will come to the reader once he has made the effort to create a work of creative nonfiction. This brings his argument to its next major concept stemming from objectivity in writing in the genre. He states that â€Å"creative nonfiction cannot be self-serving†. From this I now understand that the writer must not be boastful or self-indulgent towards his own character but instead be able to write a tale of his life while remaining unbiased. He explains that in order to remain unbiased and non-egotistical one must make an honest effort to analyze his relation to events, places, and people. He describes this analyzing as a way of circling – a â€Å"way of looking again and again at itself from all angles in order to see itself most fully†. I found this to be one of the most effective concepts in developing any piece of writing. One must analyze and reanalyze the situation at hand from every possible angle and perspective to not only find the best strategy for retelling but also for the pursuit of truth. Another argument Lott makes is in regards to the question of deluding oneself when attempting to put order to an event that may not inherently beget such order. This was a question that I myself have pondered in not so many words. This comes back to the question as to how much creative freedom can a writer utilize in recalling a situation, person, place, or time. Lott’s answer is that the writer is the individual who determines the truth. In his words, â€Å"in circling my subject, isnt it me who determines my course, my longitude and latitude, and therefore am I, by definition, being the most subjective of anyone on planet earth when it comes to my subject? † I tend to agree with this sentiment – I believe that truth is subjective. Truth is valid if the believer holds is to be so. In writing creative nonfiction, if a writer believes that a certain event happened within the limitations of his recollection then as long as he is making an honest effort to provide truth then truth is present. This holds regardless of the fact that an event may not have taken place exactly as the writer has described. The reader will never be able to prove otherwise so he must trust the writer just as much as the writer must trust the reader to believe him. I found Lott’s arguments extremely compelling and although he initially stated that there is no destination for the pursuit of a definition, I feel as if his conclusion has found a valid one. Throughout the essay Lott presents new concepts and ideas subsequent to his original definition. By the end he combines these into a very comprehensive and easily identifiable model of creative nonfiction.
